Testimonials & Reviews

Below are some excerpts of reviews we have received in the media and from our guests. See the most up-to-date reviews on our TripAdvisor page here.

From the Media:

“The Linden Centre was not conceived of as a conventional hotel and does not offer multi-starred comforts… But none of this detracts from the Centre’s appeal. Many of the guests are Chinese: prominent artists, affluent young couples and high-ranking officials. They divide their time between practising tai-chi and quietly contemplating the surrounding rice-fields, and appear to be deeply grateful to Brian for providing an antidote to the frantic pace of China’s cities.”

“The Linden Centre seeks to immerse visitors in rituals of everyday life in the village and let them experience age-old traditions rarely practiced in contemporary China. Guests may take part in a morning tai chi session with an instructor, go hunting for antiques in local attics, visit a tea plantation or make a Buddhist pilgrimage up Jizu mountain.”

“I’ve seen the Linden Centre transform from a massive construction project to a beautiful, fully restored historic mansion, and I can say it’s probably the nicest place I’ve ever stayed in China.”

“This is an extraordinary place. A lovely village, a magnificent Bai courtyard house beautifully restored, a superb library of books on Chinese and minority culture and history, the best hosts imaginable.”

“All the other guests’ praises on TripAdviser were true. Imagine you were invited to an old friend’s home in an exquisitely renovated mansion in China. Linden Centre is a rare piece of jewel! It is luxurious, quiet, authentic, small, with great service and great food.”

From Program Participants:

“Your endeavor is not only impressive, it also conveys your deep commitment to China. Thanks for letting us get a glimpse.”

“The charm of the old times has been combined with the comforts of modern convenience, like Western style elegant bathrooms and wireless broadband. We loved the spacious guest rooms, the beautiful and peaceful courtyards, the sun deck with the view over the mountains and the wheat fields and rice paddies. The deck is a magic place to relax with a glass of wine in the evening. We had the bonus of a full moon which nicely silhouetted the mountains – an amazing setting!

There is a lot to do in and around Linden Centre. We visited the market in Xizhou with the chef and later watched him prepare our lunch from the local fresh ingredients – and he makes delicious food! We walked through the fields surrounding Linden Centre to the lake, with Brian Linden as our guide. He gave us the history and the tales about culture, folklore, art and antiques of the area. He also guided us through an antique market, telling us how to tell the real thing from the fakes. We spent an enjoyable day in old town Dali with the Linden family and all their guests, wandering through the narrow cobblestone lanes, snacking on the local food and in the cafés and bars where we had a relaxing rest.” – Sibylla Grottke, German Guest from Shanghai

“Xizhou is an authentic old town. There are a lot of beautiful places in China but so many are artificial and lacking in spirit. Xizhou has kept its old customs and architecture. We spent an unforgettable Chinese New Year with the Lindens as our hosts.” – Peng Xiancheng, Professional Artist from China
